Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính, accompanied by a high-level Vietnamese delegation, visited and held a working session with Novatek Group. Pic: VGP/Nhật Bắc.

At the meeting, Mr. Leonid Viktorovich Mikhelson, Chairman of Novatek, introduced the company’s formation history and its development orientation in Vietnam.

Novatek was established in August 1994 and primarily operates in the exploration, production, processing, and commercialization of natural gas and liquid hydrocarbons. It is the second-largest natural gas producer in the Russian Federation (after Gazprom) and ranks as the seventh-largest publicly traded company globally by natural gas output. In the Forbes Global 2000 ranking in 2020, Novatek was listed as the world’s 316th largest public company.

Novatek has successfully implemented large-scale LNG (liquefied natural gas) projects and has developed proprietary liquefaction technologies. The company is currently highly interested in Vietnam’s LNG sector, including participation in the Ca Na project in cooperation with partners such as Zarubezhneft, and is actively exploring Vietnam’s rapidly growing gas market.

Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính highly appreciated Novatek’s achievements and noted that the company’s operations align with Vietnam’s major strategic orientations, including the goal of achieving economic growth of over 10%, reaching net-zero emissions by 2050, and implementing key transitions—particularly energy transition. Rapid economic growth and the development of sectors such as artificial intelligence require substantial energy supply. Novatek’s ongoing exchanges and cooperation with Vietnamese partners, combined with aligned development orientations, are expected to create synergistic effects for both sides.

Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính welcomed Novatek’s participation in the development of LNG terminal infrastructure projects, including LNG storage and port facilities, as well as LNG-to-power plants in Hải Phòng, Quảng Ninh, Nam Du (An Giang), Nghi Sơn (Thanh Hóa), and Cà Ná (Khánh Hòa), along with the provision of a stable LNG supply to the Vietnamese market. Pic: VGP/Nhật Bắc.

Assessing energy cooperation between Vietnam and the Russian Federation as a bright spot in bilateral relations over the past more than 50 years, the Prime Minister expressed sincere appreciation to the Russian side for its investment, support, and facilitation, which have enabled Vietnam’s oil and gas sector and the Vietnam National Industry–Energy Group to grow into a multinational corporation. He also emphasized that energy cooperation is an area of Russia’s strength, aligns with Vietnam’s demand, and constitutes a key pillar of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries.

In the current context of rapid, complex, and unpredictable global developments, strengthening relations with traditional partners and diversifying supply sources, markets, products, and supply chains is of critical importance. Vietnam is also strongly promoting the application of science and technology, as well as innovation, to restructure and transform its energy sector.

Affirming that both sides share demand and a common vision for cooperation, the Prime Minister expressed support for Novatek to expand its investment activities in Vietnam in accordance with applicable laws, taking into account the foundation of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and the long-standing traditional friendship between Vietnam and the Russian Federation.

Noting that Vietnam is reviewing and amending legal regulations related to the power sector, the Prime Minister welcomed Novatek’s participation in the development of LNG terminal infrastructure projects, including LNG storage and port facilities, as well as LNG-to-power plants in Hai Phong, Quang Ninh, Nam Du (An Giang), Nghi Son (Thanh Hoa), and Ca Na (Khanh Hoa), along with the provision of a stable LNG supply to the Vietnamese market.

With the spirit of “connecting the past, promoting the present, and looking toward the future,” “saving time, valuing intellect, and acting decisively at the right moment,” and “listening with sincerity, sharing from the heart, and acting with tangible products and concrete results,” the Prime Minister requested Novatek to closely coordinate with local authorities, relevant agencies, and energy-sector enterprises (including PVN and EVN), as well as Vietnamese private enterprises, to participate in and implement projects, including the development of large-scale LNG storage facilities by Novatek in Vietnam. He also noted that the Government will encourage Vietnamese enterprises to enhance cooperation with Novatek in liquefied natural gas technologies.

Novatek’s leadership expressed strong agreement and affirmed that the company will actively engage with Vietnamese partners to advance the projects highlighted by Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính./.

Global energy markets are in turmoil due to escalating tensions in the Middle East.

The energy market is experiencing heightened volatility as the conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran intensifies, rapidly increasing concerns over potential supply disruptions. Brent crude oil prices remain elevated, at times exceeding USD 84 per barrel, and continue to hover near multi-month highs. The gas market is also under strong upward price pressure, driven by disruptions to shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz and the suspension of operations at several production facilities.

Location of the Strait of Hormuz and surrounding countries

The Strait of Hormuz—a vital artery supplying approximately 20% of the world’s oil—has experienced severe disruptions to maritime trade due to regional armed threats and military activities.

Several notable recent signals:

Brent crude prices have risen to around USD 79 per barrel and still show potential for further upside.

QatarEnergy has announced a temporary suspension of LNG production starting from March 2.

The Ras Tanura Refinery in Saudi Arabia has announced its shutdown.

If the Strait of Hormuz remains paralyzed, ensuring LNG and LPG supply for Asia—including Vietnam—will become a tangible challenge for manufacturing enterprises.

COGAS’s “3-in-1” Integrated Model: A Flexible Energy Solution for Businesses

Amid unpredictable fluctuations in the energy market, reliance on a single fuel source can expose businesses to significant risks in terms of cost and supply security. In response to this trend, COGAS has developed an integrated CNG – LNG – LPG model, delivering a flexible and sustainable energy solution for industrial customers.

Ensuring a stable gas fuel supply: Businesses can flexibly switch between different gas types depending on market conditions and operational requirements. In the event that imported LNG or LPG supplies are disrupted due to geopolitical or logistics factors, CNG can be promptly deployed as a supplementary source, enabling plants to maintain stable operations.

Optimizing energy costs: The integrated model enables customers to proactively select the most cost-advantageous fuel at any given time. As a result, businesses can mitigate risks arising from global energy price volatility and optimize their fuel budgets over the long term.

COGAS’s Integrated LPG – LNG Model

Proactive Supply Management – The Foundation for a Flexible Energy Solution

With years of experience in the supply and distribution of industrial gases, COGAS positions itself as a comprehensive energy solutions provider, partnering with businesses amid the ongoing volatility of the energy market.

As imported LNG and LPG supplies are increasingly affected by geopolitical factors and global logistics chains, integrating multiple gas sources within a unified model enables businesses to enhance operational flexibility and strengthen supply risk management.

With increasingly advanced capabilities in gas compression, transportation, and distribution operations, COGAS is well-positioned to deliver integrated energy solutions, enabling customers to:

Maintain stable production across multiple market scenarios

Optimize long-term fuel costs

Enhance sustainable competitiveness

Through its “3-in-1” integrated model, COGAS continues to reinforce its role as a trusted energy partner, supporting businesses in achieving green, efficient, and sustainable growth in the future.

Hệ thống cấp khí tự nhiên hóa lỏng tiếp nhận, lưu trữ, hóa hơi và cung cấp khí ổn định, tích hợp điều khiển tự động, an toàn cùng dịch vụ bảo dưỡng – sửa chữa đạt chuẩn quốc tế.

LNG can be applied across various sectors in Vietnam, thereby meeting expectations and supporting the Vietnamese Government’s commitment to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions.

Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) – An Emerging Trend in Vietnam’s Energy Sector

Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) was first recognized in the late 19th century. Today, it is increasingly used across many countries around the world. In line with this global energy transition, Vietnam has also started to participate in the LNG market.

Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG):

LNG was discovered in the 19th century when British chemist and physicist Michael Faraday conducted experiments with various gases, including natural gas.

LNG is primarily composed of methane (CH₄ – approximately 94.3%), is colorless, odorless, and non-toxic. It is cooled to –162°C to convert into a liquid state. In this form, LNG occupies only 1/600th the volume of natural gas under standard conditions (15°C, 1 atm), making it easier to store and transport over long distances. Its storage capacity is 2.4 times greater than that of compressed natural gas (CNG).

When combusted, LNG can produce a flame with a very high temperature (around 1,880°C) and burns completely without leaving residue. This makes machinery and equipment safer, reduces wear and tear, minimizes maintenance, and extends operational lifespan. LNG combustion emits 40% less CO₂ than coal and 30% less than oil, making it the cleanest fuel among conventional energy sources.

In 1873, German engineer Karl Von Linde built the first centrifugal gas compressor in Munich. The first LNG plant was built in West Virginia, USA in 1912 and began operating in 1917.

In 1940, the first experimental LNG station was established in Cornwell, USA. Later, an industrial facility was constructed in Ohio to meet peak natural gas demand. The facility had a liquefaction capacity of 200 m³/day and a regasification capacity of 115 m³/hour to re-inject gas into the pipeline network.

France was one of the first countries to import LNG. In the late 1950s, Gaz de France – a French multinational energy company – began establishing maritime supply routes. By 1963, three liquefaction units had been commissioned near Oran to deliver gas to the UK and France (Fos-sur-Mer terminal).

In recent years, advances in liquefaction and shipbuilding technologies have significantly propelled the development of the LNG sector. Long-distance gas transportation has become both economically and technically viable.

The United States is a prime example of LNG usage for power generation. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), in 2022, gas-fired power plants accounted for 40% of the country’s electricity production, coal for 20%, with the rest coming from renewables (21.5%) and nuclear energy (18%).

Several other countries are also accelerating their transition to natural gas: China with gas making up 10% of its energy mix, Japan 21.3%, and South Korea 18%.

With robust growth in global LNG demand, Wood Mackenzie forecasts that an additional 100 million tons of LNG capacity will be needed by the mid-2030s, a 25% increase over current supply, supplementing projects already under construction. Most of this demand is expected to come from Asia — with Vietnam being a standout name.

LNG Applications in Vietnam:

Thanks to its high energy density and low harmful emissions, LNG has become an environmentally friendly and cost-effective solution. Globally, LNG is widely used across various industries such as power generation, steel manufacturing, and metallurgy. It can also be used in transportation, as well as in supplying energy for hotels, restaurants, and tourist resorts.

Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) – The Trend of Vietnam’s Energy Sector

As of now, the Vietnam Gas Corporation (PV GAS) is the first and only enterprise in Vietnam to be granted a Certificate of Eligibility for LNG import and export trading by the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

Notably, after more than four years, PV GAS has completed Vietnam’s first, largest, and most modern LNG terminal. The Thị Vải LNG Terminal (1 MMTPA) located at the Cái Mép petroleum port can receive LNG carriers with a tonnage of up to 100,000 tons. The terminal includes a storage tank with a capacity of 180,000 m³, two regasification units with a maximum capacity of 171 tons/hour, a truck loading station, a pressure reduction station, a gas pipeline connection system, a centralized control and operations center, and a fire protection system.

The Thị Vải LNG Terminal meets all domestic and international standards and technical regulations, as well as strict operational safety requirements. These have been verified through an in-depth evaluation process and highly rated for their detailed, feasible, and tightly integrated operational planning. As a result, the reception of Vietnam’s first LNG shipment and the commissioning process were completed ahead of schedule without any technical risks or errors, ensuring safety, environmental protection, and quality standards.

Currently, PV GAS is efficiently and continuously supplying LNG to low-pressure gas consumers. The Thị Vải LNG Terminal is expected to provide additional gas supply to customers in the Southeast region and partially compensate for the domestic gas shortage starting from 2024.

In addition to investing in the Thị Vải LNG Terminal (1 MMTPA), PV GAS is also developing the Sơn Mỹ LNG Import Terminal, which is projected to have a total capacity of up to 10 million tons of LNG per year upon completion. PV GAS’s LNG infrastructure will essentially meet the future energy demand of southern Vietnam.

PV GAS is steadily implementing a strategic chain of LNG projects including the Thị Vải LNG Terminal (1 MMTPA), the Sơn Mỹ LNG Terminal project, and a similar terminal project in Northern Vietnam. With methodical and meticulous investment, this LNG terminal project chain is expected to demonstrate PV GAS’s capability to meet market demands and serve as a lever for Vietnam to establish a footprint in both regional and global LNG markets.

In the near future, LNG is expected to be applied across various sectors in Vietnam, thereby fulfilling the nation’s commitment to achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions.

Hydrogen – An Infinite and Safe Energy Source That Causes No Environmental Incidents for Humans.
The Key to a Green Era.

Hydrogen Fuel – The Future Alternative to Oil and Gas

Hydrogen fuel is a zero-emission energy source, produced by burning pure hydrogen gas in the air.

It’s no coincidence that Australian Prime Minister John Howard, host of this year’s APEC summit, chose climate change (caused by emissions) as the central topic. Nor was it mere performance when, back in 2003, U.S. President George W. Bush decided to invest in a new energy source—hydrogen—and the world’s leading automobile manufacturers rushed into the field. This marks a new vision not only for the energy sector…

A new energy source: hydrogen (H₂).
Hydrogen is a gas with the highest combustion temperature of all natural fuels and has been used as propellant in space rockets. Its key characteristic is that the hydrogen molecule contains no other chemical elements—no carbon (C), sulfur (S), or nitrogen (N)—so its only combustion byproduct is water (H₂O), making it an ideal clean fuel.

Hydrogen – An Infinite and Environmentally Friendly Energy Source

Hydrogen is a safe fuel that poses no environmental hazards to humans, unlike nuclear energy, which has caused numerous radioactive leaks in recent years.

Notable Nuclear Incidents Worldwide:

These include the radioactive leak on March 28, 1979, at the Three Mile Island Nuclear Power Plant (Pennsylvania, USA); the nuclear reactor explosion on April 26, 1986, at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (Ukraine, formerly part of the Soviet Union); the September 30, 1999, accident at the Tokaimura nuclear fuel reprocessing plant (Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan), which exposed 119 people to radiation; and the August 9, 2004, rupture of a hot water and steam pipe at the Mihama Nuclear Power Plant (Fukui Prefecture, Japan), which killed five workers.

In 2006, another fire occurred at the same plant. Most recently, after the 6.8 magnitude Chuetsu earthquake on July 16, 2007, a serious radioactive leak was reported at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant (Niigata Prefecture, Japan), the largest of its kind in the world.

Approximately 400 barrels of nuclear waste were damaged, and some radioactive liquid leaked into the sea, forcing the plant to shut down for at least one year for inspection by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Additionally, numerous other concerns remain, such as nuclear waste management, the risk of nuclear materials falling into the hands of terrorists, and conflicts over nuclear technology monopolies held by a few countries versus the push to break that monopoly.

Hydrogen – An Infinite Energy Source

Hydrogen is produced from water and solar energy, thus often referred to as “solar hydrogen.” Both water and sunlight are infinite and available everywhere on the planet. Solar energy is abundant and eternal—around 3×10²⁴ joules per day, approximately 100 times more than the world’s total annual energy consumption. Therefore, solar hydrogen is a truly limitless fuel source that can be used for centuries without fear of depletion, ensuring energy security and independence for all nations—without the monopolization or conflict seen with fossil fuels.

There are two main methods for producing solar hydrogen:

Water electrolysis using solar electricity from solar cells.

Photoelectrochemical water splitting using sunlight and photocatalysts.

In both methods, the reaction is:
H₂O → H₂ + ½ O₂

Since 1960, General Electric has produced hydrogen fuel cell systems to power NASA’s Apollo missions, followed by the Apollo-Soyuz, Skylab, and Space Shuttle programs. Today, fuel cells continue to power space shuttles and stations, as both hydrogen and oxygen are onboard. Interestingly, fuel cells not only provide electricity but also generate ultra-pure drinking water for astronauts, as water is the only byproduct.

Hydrogen as a Replacement for Gasoline in Transportation

Many prototypes of hydrogen-powered cars (hydrogen vehicles) and hybrid vehicles combining hydrogen internal combustion engines with electric motors—collectively known as Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEVs)—have been showcased at international auto shows by manufacturers such as Honda, Ford, and Mercedes-Benz.

Japan announced that by 2008, ZEV models such as the Toyota Prius, Toyota Camry Hybrid, Ford Escape Hybrid, and Honda Insight would be on the road. By April 2007, the U.S. had around 200 hydrogen-powered cars and buses in operation. Recently, a hydrogen-fueled car completed a 4,000 km test drive across Australia, proving that vehicles can run safely and pollution-free without gasoline.

Hydrogen as an Energy Source for Electricity Generation

Hydrogen can be used to generate electricity as a replacement for fossil fuels via fuel cells. These operate in reverse to hydrogen production: when hydrogen and oxygen are combined under specific conditions, they generate water and electrical energy.

Fuel cells are open systems—continuous input of hydrogen and oxygen results in a steady output of water and electricity for as long as supply is maintained. Thus, fuel cells act as real electricity generators, using only hydrogen and oxygen as inputs and emitting only water.

No generators, no massive turbines, no moving parts, no noise, no exhaust. Hydrogen fuel cells can produce electricity anywhere, at any scale—from a few watts to hundreds of megawatts—serving remote areas, power stations, high-rise buildings, or entire cities without relying on massive power plants or national grids. Consumers can produce their own electricity. This could break the monopoly on electricity production and distribution.

The Hydrogen Economy Will Replace the Fossil Fuel Economy

A new energy revolution is underway.

Hydrogen and fuel cells are the keys to solving air pollution and global climate change—issues directly tied to fossil fuel use.

A hydrogen-based economy will emerge, similar to the rise of the oil and gas economy, requiring fundamental infrastructure changes. The energy production model will shift from exploration and extraction to solar-based manufacturing. New systems for storage, transport, and delivery must be built. Engines must be redesigned for hydrogen, entirely different from gasoline and diesel systems.

New technical standards, safety regulations, and legal frameworks must be created. Education, training, and research will need updated content and facilities, distinct from today’s fossil-based systems. Pollution from hydrogen use will no longer drain research budgets or dominate global climate conferences.

This comprehensive shift marks a true revolution—on par with the industrial revolution triggered by the invention of the steam engine and coal use.

Oil and Gas Are Not Infinite

Few imagine being stranded due to a lack of gasoline. Yet, according to recent assessments, total global fossil energy reserves (oil, gas, coal) are approximately 1,279 GTCE (Giga Tonnes Coal Equivalent), including:

Oil: ~329 GTCE

Natural Gas: ~198 GTCE

Coal: ~697 GTCE

At current consumption rates:

Oil (5.5 GTCE/year) will last ~42 years,

Gas (3.0 GTCE/year) ~65 years,

Coal (4.1 GTCE/year) ~170 years.

And this doesn’t even account for increasing yearly demand, which shortens these lifespans further.

Oil and Gas Are Not Harmless

Fossil fuels contain elements like carbon (C), hydrogen (H), oxygen (O), nitrogen (N), and sulfur (S). Coal often includes radioactive uranium (U) and thorium (Th). Burning coal releases significant radioactive materials. In 2000 alone, the world released about 12,000 tons of thorium and 5,000 tons of uranium into the atmosphere.

The use of fossil fuels has left humanity and our planet with serious and lasting consequences.
