LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) is a flammable gas mixture primarily composed of propane (C₃H₈) and butane (C₄H₁₀), extracted from crude oil or natural gas. LPG is compressed into liquid form at high pressure to facilitate storage and transportation.
Advantages of LPG:
- Efficient storage and transportation: The volume of liquefied LPG is reduced by about 250 times compared to its gaseous state.
- Environmentally friendly: Burns cleanly, producing high heat output with lower emissions of CO₂ and SO₂ compared to other fossil fuels.
- Versatile usage: Suitable for households, transportation, and industrial applications.
Disadvantages:
- Fire and explosion risk: LPG is highly flammable and can ignite in confined spaces if leaked.
- Specialized systems required: Requires high-pressure storage tanks and safety-assured systems.
