Nor was it mere performance when, back in 2003, U.S. President George W. Bush decided to invest in a new energy source\u2014hydrogen\u2014and the world\u2019s leading automobile manufacturers rushed into the field. This marks a new vision not only for the energy sector&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>A new energy source: <strong>hydrogen (H\u2082)<\/strong>.<br \/>\nHydrogen is a gas with the highest combustion temperature of all natural fuels and has been used as propellant in space rockets. Its key characteristic is that the hydrogen molecule contains no other chemical elements\u2014no carbon (C), sulfur (S), or nitrogen (N)\u2014so its only combustion byproduct is water (H\u2082O), making it an ideal clean fuel.<\/p>\n<h3>Hydrogen \u2013 An Infinite and Environmentally Friendly Energy Source<\/h3>\n<p>Hydrogen is a safe fuel that poses no environmental hazards to humans, unlike nuclear energy, which has caused numerous radioactive leaks in recent years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div id=\"NewsContent\" class=\"detail-content mt40\">\n<div class=\"detail-text\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cogas.com.vn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/chi-phi-thi-cong-va-lap-dat-be-tu-hoai-composite-cho-nam-2025-150.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-cke-saved-src=\"https:\/\/cogas.com.vn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/chi-phi-thi-cong-va-lap-dat-be-tu-hoai-composite-cho-nam-2025-150.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Honda FCX (2006) used to hydro enegy. (Automobilemag)<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"57\" data-end=\"97\"><strong data-start=\"57\" data-end=\"97\">Notable Nuclear Incidents Worldwide:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"99\" data-end=\"650\">These include the radioactive leak on March 28, 1979, at the Three Mile Island Nuclear Power Plant (Pennsylvania, USA); the nuclear reactor explosion on April 26, 1986, at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (Ukraine, formerly part of the Soviet Union); the September 30, 1999, accident at the Tokaimura nuclear fuel reprocessing plant (Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan), which exposed 119 people to radiation; and the August 9, 2004, rupture of a hot water and steam pipe at the Mihama Nuclear Power Plant (Fukui Prefecture, Japan), which killed five workers.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"652\" data-end=\"930\">In 2006, another fire occurred at the same plant. Most recently, after the 6.8 magnitude Chuetsu earthquake on July 16, 2007, a serious radioactive leak was reported at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant (Niigata Prefecture, Japan), the largest of its kind in the world.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"932\" data-end=\"1416\">Approximately 400 barrels of nuclear waste were damaged, and some radioactive liquid leaked into the sea, forcing the plant to shut down for at least one year for inspection by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Additionally, numerous other concerns remain, such as nuclear waste management, the risk of nuclear materials falling into the hands of terrorists, and conflicts over nuclear technology monopolies held by a few countries versus the push to break that monopoly.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1418\" data-end=\"1421\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"1423\" data-end=\"1467\"><strong data-start=\"1427\" data-end=\"1467\">Hydrogen \u2013 An Infinite Energy Source<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1469\" data-end=\"2023\">Hydrogen is produced from water and solar energy, thus often referred to as &#8220;solar hydrogen.&#8221; Both water and sunlight are infinite and available everywhere on the planet. Solar energy is abundant and eternal\u2014around 3\u00d710\u00b2\u2074 joules per day, approximately 100 times more than the world\u2019s total annual energy consumption. Therefore, solar hydrogen is a truly limitless fuel source that can be used for centuries without fear of depletion, ensuring energy security and independence for all nations\u2014without the monopolization or conflict seen with fossil fuels.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2025\" data-end=\"2081\">There are two main methods for producing solar hydrogen:<\/p>\n<ol data-start=\"2082\" data-end=\"2228\">\n<li data-start=\"2082\" data-end=\"2149\">\n<p data-start=\"2085\" data-end=\"2149\"><strong data-start=\"2085\" data-end=\"2107\">Water electrolysis<\/strong> using solar electricity from solar cells.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2150\" data-end=\"2228\">\n<p data-start=\"2153\" data-end=\"2228\"><strong data-start=\"2153\" data-end=\"2193\">Photoelectrochemical water splitting<\/strong> using sunlight and photocatalysts.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p data-start=\"2230\" data-end=\"2283\">In both methods, the reaction is:<br \/>\n<strong data-start=\"2264\" data-end=\"2283\">H\u2082O \u2192 H\u2082 + \u00bd O\u2082<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2285\" data-end=\"2705\">Since 1960, General Electric has produced hydrogen fuel cell systems to power NASA\u2019s Apollo missions, followed by the Apollo-Soyuz, Skylab, and Space Shuttle programs. Today, fuel cells continue to power space shuttles and stations, as both hydrogen and oxygen are onboard. Interestingly, fuel cells not only provide electricity but also generate ultra-pure drinking water for astronauts, as water is the only byproduct.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"2707\" data-end=\"2710\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"2712\" data-end=\"2776\"><strong data-start=\"2716\" data-end=\"2776\">Hydrogen as a Replacement for Gasoline in Transportation<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2778\" data-end=\"3087\">Many prototypes of hydrogen-powered cars (hydrogen vehicles) and hybrid vehicles combining hydrogen internal combustion engines with electric motors\u2014collectively known as <strong data-start=\"2949\" data-end=\"2982\">Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEVs)<\/strong>\u2014have been showcased at international auto shows by manufacturers such as Honda, Ford, and Mercedes-Benz.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3089\" data-end=\"3477\">Japan announced that by 2008, ZEV models such as the Toyota Prius, Toyota Camry Hybrid, Ford Escape Hybrid, and Honda Insight would be on the road. By April 2007, the U.S. had around 200 hydrogen-powered cars and buses in operation. Recently, a hydrogen-fueled car completed a 4,000 km test drive across Australia, proving that vehicles can run safely and pollution-free without gasoline.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"3479\" data-end=\"3482\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"3484\" data-end=\"3547\"><strong data-start=\"3488\" data-end=\"3547\">Hydrogen as an Energy Source for Electricity Generation<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3549\" data-end=\"3804\">Hydrogen can be used to generate electricity as a replacement for fossil fuels via <strong data-start=\"3632\" data-end=\"3646\">fuel cells<\/strong>. These operate in reverse to hydrogen production: when hydrogen and oxygen are combined under specific conditions, they generate water and electrical energy.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3806\" data-end=\"4081\">Fuel cells are open systems\u2014continuous input of hydrogen and oxygen results in a steady output of water and electricity for as long as supply is maintained. Thus, fuel cells act as real electricity generators, using only hydrogen and oxygen as inputs and emitting only water.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4083\" data-end=\"4520\">No generators, no massive turbines, no moving parts, no noise, no exhaust. Hydrogen fuel cells can produce electricity anywhere, at any scale\u2014from a few watts to hundreds of megawatts\u2014serving remote areas, power stations, high-rise buildings, or entire cities without relying on massive power plants or national grids. Consumers can produce their own electricity. This could break the monopoly on electricity production and distribution.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"4522\" data-end=\"4525\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"4527\" data-end=\"4592\"><strong data-start=\"4531\" data-end=\"4592\">The Hydrogen Economy Will Replace the Fossil Fuel Economy<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"4594\" data-end=\"4630\">A new energy revolution is underway.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4632\" data-end=\"4760\">Hydrogen and fuel cells are the keys to solving air pollution and global climate change\u2014issues directly tied to fossil fuel use.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4762\" data-end=\"5152\">A hydrogen-based economy will emerge, similar to the rise of the oil and gas economy, requiring fundamental infrastructure changes. The energy production model will shift from exploration and extraction to solar-based manufacturing. New systems for storage, transport, and delivery must be built. Engines must be redesigned for hydrogen, entirely different from gasoline and diesel systems.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5154\" data-end=\"5462\">New technical standards, safety regulations, and legal frameworks must be created. Education, training, and research will need updated content and facilities, distinct from today\u2019s fossil-based systems. Pollution from hydrogen use will no longer drain research budgets or dominate global climate conferences.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5464\" data-end=\"5611\">This comprehensive shift marks a true revolution\u2014on par with the industrial revolution triggered by the invention of the steam engine and coal use.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"5613\" data-end=\"5616\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"5618\" data-end=\"5654\"><strong data-start=\"5622\" data-end=\"5654\">Oil and Gas Are Not Infinite<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"5656\" data-end=\"5871\">Few imagine being stranded due to a lack of gasoline. Yet, according to recent assessments, total global fossil energy reserves (oil, gas, coal) are approximately 1,279 GTCE (Giga Tonnes Coal Equivalent), including:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"5872\" data-end=\"5931\">\n<li data-start=\"5872\" data-end=\"5888\">\n<p data-start=\"5874\" data-end=\"5888\">Oil: ~329 GTCE<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"5889\" data-end=\"5913\">\n<p data-start=\"5891\" data-end=\"5913\">Natural Gas: ~198 GTCE<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"5914\" data-end=\"5931\">\n<p data-start=\"5916\" data-end=\"5931\">Coal: ~697 GTCE<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"5933\" data-end=\"5962\">At current consumption rates:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"5963\" data-end=\"6073\">\n<li data-start=\"5963\" data-end=\"6005\">\n<p data-start=\"5965\" data-end=\"6005\">Oil (5.5 GTCE\/year) will last ~42 years,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"6006\" data-end=\"6038\">\n<p data-start=\"6008\" data-end=\"6038\">Gas (3.0 GTCE\/year) ~65 years,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"6039\" data-end=\"6073\">\n<p data-start=\"6041\" data-end=\"6073\">Coal (4.1 GTCE\/year) ~170 years.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"6075\" data-end=\"6174\">And this doesn&#8217;t even account for increasing yearly demand, which shortens these lifespans further.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"6176\" data-end=\"6179\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"6181\" data-end=\"6217\"><strong data-start=\"6185\" data-end=\"6217\">Oil and Gas Are Not Harmless<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"6219\" data-end=\"6550\">Fossil fuels contain elements like carbon (C), hydrogen (H), oxygen (O), nitrogen (N), and sulfur (S). Coal often includes radioactive uranium (U) and thorium (Th). Burning coal releases significant radioactive materials.
